Monroe Country Public Library Southwest Branch
Bloomington, IN
2024 American Institute of Architects Indianapolis Design Excellence Citation Award
An important community beacon for Monroe County, the new Monroe County Public Library Southwest Branch is an open, inviting, and sustainably designed facility for the rural community which it serves. The 41,600 square feet building takes advantage of its sloped natural site by locating parking on the lower level and public services on the upper level. The design strategy preserves green space and incorporates an outdoor amphitheater to enhance library programming.
A double height space with stairs and tiered studies connects the building levels. Large windows provide natural light and views and capitalize on the woodland setting. A butterfly roof form accentuates the overall lightness of the building.
Spaces include an entry lobby with a public service and computing area, adult collections, quiet reading room, conference room, large program room, study rooms, teen center, children’s area, teaching kitchen, all-ages collaboration area, administrative offices, staff lounge, and support spaces.
